Our office handles all aspects of a stepparent adoption. In some cases, the absent parent's whereabouts are known and he/she is willing to cooperate with the stepparent adoption. In other cases, the absent parent's whereabouts are unknown or the parent may be unwilling to cooperate. In either situation, the process is commenced by the filing of a petition with the appropriate county. Ultimately, the parental rights of the absent parent are terminated and the stepparent becomes the legal mother or father of the child. An uncontested stepparent adoption usually takes approximately six (6) months to complete.
