In an adult adoption, two adults contract with one another, and with the State of California, for one adult to adopt the other. Once the adoption has been finalized, the two adults assume the relationship of parent and child. If the person being adopted or adopting is married, the spouse of that adult must consent to the adoption. However, the biological parents of the person being adopted (or adopting) do not have to consent. There is no home study required in an adult adoption and the process can be completed very quickly.
